Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV Update Arrives in Two Free Parts: SUGO in October, Autumn Ring in December

Polyphony Digital has confirmed that Gran Turismo 7's Spec IV update will not arrive as one download. It splits into two free releases: the first in October 2026, the second in December 2026, both on PlayStation 5. Studio president Kazunori Yamauchi announced the split during Sony's State of Play, and the headline additions are two circuits and 12 cars spread across the pair.

What the Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV update adds in October

Part one brings Sportsland SUGO, the Miyagi circuit best known to Japanese touring car fans for its steep elevation changes and the Dunlop bridge over the main straight. Polyphony describes it as a flowing layout, and it has never appeared in a Gran Turismo game before — this is its series debut rather than a track returning from an older entry.

October also carries the first slice of the 12 new cars. Polyphony has not named a single one of them yet, and has not said how the 12 split between the two updates. Expect that to change on 3 October, when Gran Turismo World Series Round 3 takes place in Singapore and the studio has said more Spec IV details will follow.

What lands in December

The December half brings back Autumn Ring, an original circuit that dates to the first Gran Turismo in 1997 and has been missing from the series since Gran Turismo 6. That makes it the sentimental half of the package.

December also gets Family Mode, which Polyphony frames as an entry point for players with very different skill levels sharing a console — the studio has not detailed how it works mechanically. Online Drift Trials arrive in the same window, turning what is currently a single-player licence-style exercise into a competitive event scored on control and precision.

The new online and career features

Beyond the tracks, Spec IV changes how you buy, view and race cars:

  • Shuffle Races — an online mode where the game assigns cars rather than letting players pick. In Gran Turismo 5's version, everyone received a machine of broadly similar performance at random. Polyphony has not confirmed the GT7 rules.
  • Online Drift Trials — head-to-head drift scoring, arriving in December.
  • Concierge — a car-buying feature aimed at the rotating dealer stock problem, so you request a car rather than wait for it to cycle in.
  • Expanded Car Viewer — more to inspect in the garage, though the studio has not said what.
  • New Driving Experiences and additional progression elements.

The whole thing is being positioned as the opening act for the franchise's 30th anniversary in 2027, three decades after the first Gran Turismo shipped on the original PlayStation.

Which platforms get it

Polyphony's announcement was made in a PlayStation 5 context and does not mention PlayStation 4 or PS VR2 anywhere. Gran Turismo 7 still runs on PS4 and still supports PS VR2 headsets on PS5, and past major updates have shipped to both consoles, but until the studio says so directly, PS4 parity for Spec IV is not confirmed. If you race in VR, treat that as unanswered too.

There is no version number attached to either half yet. Recent content drops have followed the numbered pattern set by update 1.71, which added four cars including two JZX100 Toyotas, so the October release will likely land as 1.7x or higher in the patch notes.

Where this fits in Sony's autumn

Spec IV was one of a long run of announcements at the State of Play that aired on 3 September, alongside release dates for Until Dawn 2 and Final Fantasy VII Revelation. It is also free, which separates it from most of what shared the stage.

PS5 owners have had a busy few weeks on the non-game side too, with Live TV rolling out in the US with over 100 free channels. And if you want something to drive on a phone between now and October, our round-up of the best racing games for Android covers what actually holds up on a touchscreen.

Nothing in Spec IV costs money, and nothing announced so far requires a PlayStation Plus subscription except the online modes, which need it as all GT7 online racing already does.
