GTA 6 Extended Look Tops Netflix With 31.1 Million Views and No. 1 in 87 Countries

Netflix's 27-minute Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look finished last week as the most-watched title on the service, pulling 31.1 million views between its 27 August premiere and the close of Netflix's Sunday counting window. It also hit No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks.

For anyone who missed it on the app, nothing is locked away: the same video went up on YouTube six hours after the Netflix premiere and is still free to watch there. What the chart result shows is that a game trailer, dropped into a film list, beat every scripted release Netflix had that week.

How big is 31.1 million views, really?

Netflix counts a view as total hours watched divided by a title's runtime, so a 27-minute film clears that bar far more easily than a two-hour feature. That caveat matters. Even so, the gap was not close. The Whisper Man, with Adam Scott and Robert De Niro, took second place on the English film list with 23.2 million views. On the TV side, Death of the Pastor's Wife led with 19 million and the third season of Beauty in Black followed with 13 million.

Season 5 of Outer Banks landed third on the English TV list with 7.4 million views. We covered when those final episodes went live when they dropped.

Why did Rockstar put a trailer on Netflix at all?

Netflix described the premiere as first-of-its-kind, and the exclusivity window was tiny by streaming standards — six hours, not six weeks. That structure tells you what the deal was for: a headline, a chart position and a reason for people who do not follow gaming news to open the app on a Thursday afternoon.

The video itself is captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 footage across 27 minutes, which makes it the longest and most detailed look at the game so far. We wrote about the premiere arrangement when Rockstar announced it in August.

What does this mean for the game's release?

  • Nothing in the chart data changes the launch plan. The dates and pricing Rockstar has confirmed are unchanged.
  • The extended look is promotional footage, not a demo — there is no playable build attached to it.
  • Netflix has not said whether it plans more game showcases. Treat anything beyond this one premiere as speculation.

If you want the confirmed facts about the game rather than the marketing, our rundown of what Rockstar has actually announced stays the better reference.

Where can you still watch it?

Both places. It remains on Netflix in the countries where it premiered, and the YouTube upload carries the same 27-minute cut. You do not need a paid subscription to see it, and there is no separate purchase or tier requirement on Netflix's side.

One practical note for Netflix users: the service has had a rough stretch on the app side, including a runtime display glitch that showed episodes as hundreds of hours long. If the extended look shows a strange duration in your list, that is a display bug rather than a different version of the video.

Is Netflix turning into a games platform?

It already runs a mobile games library inside its app, so the ambition is not new. What is new is using the film list as a marketing surface for a console game it does not sell. That worked once, at scale, with the biggest release in the industry. Whether a smaller title could repeat it is untested.

Netflix's slate keeps moving either way — several titles are also on the way out, including the Halo series leaving the US catalogue at the start of October.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many views did the GTA 6 extended look get on Netflix?

It recorded 31.1 million views between its premiere on 27 August 2026 and the end of Netflix's counting window on Sunday 30 August. That made it the most-watched title on the English film list for the week, ahead of The Whisper Man at 23.2 million.

Can I still watch the GTA 6 extended look for free?

Yes. The same 27-minute video was posted to YouTube six hours after the Netflix premiere and remains free to watch there, with no subscription needed. It is also still available on Netflix in the countries where it premiered.

How long is the GTA 6 extended look?

It runs 27 minutes and is captured entirely from in-game footage recorded on a PlayStation 5. It is the longest and most detailed look at the game released so far.

How does Netflix count a view?

Netflix divides a title's total hours watched by its runtime. Because the extended look is only 27 minutes long, it accumulates views faster than a full-length film would from the same number of viewing hours.

Does this change the GTA 6 release date?

No. The chart result is a viewership milestone for promotional footage and has no bearing on the launch schedule. Rockstar's previously confirmed release plans are unchanged.
