Apple Scrapped a Custom iPhone Duo Apple Pencil — the $79 USB-C Model Arrives Late 2026

Apple built a shorter, custom Apple Pencil for the iPhone Duo and then killed it before it reached mass production, according to reports published Sunday that cite people familiar with the project. The stylus Duo buyers will actually use is the ordinary $79 Apple Pencil with USB-C — and it will not work on day one, because Apple has said pencil support arrives later this year, after the foldable goes on sale on October 23.

That gap matters if you are pre-ordering. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB in the US, pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and it ships a week later. Buy a pencil at launch and you will be holding an accessory your phone cannot use yet.

Why the custom pencil died

The abandoned model was smaller than any shipping Apple Pencil and was designed to sit along the hinge side of the folded phone, where it would have charged magnetically. Reports describe technical problems that surfaced before manufacturing began. It is not clear whether the fault sat in the stylus or in the phone's ability to charge it through that edge — the hinge side is the one part of a folding phone where there is very little room for a charging coil.

Treat the reason as a supply-chain account rather than an Apple statement. What is confirmed is the outcome: Apple's own announcement says the Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, and names no other model.

What the USB-C Apple Pencil can and cannot do

This is the cheapest pencil Apple sells, and it is also the most basic. Going in expecting iPad Pro behavior will disappoint you.

• It has: tilt sensitivity, so shading and line weight respond to the angle you hold it at.
• It does not have: pressure sensitivity, the double-tap tool switch, barrel roll, haptic feedback, the squeeze gesture, or Find My tracking.
• It charges over a USB-C port under a sliding cap on the barrel, not by snapping onto the side of the device.
• It costs $79 from Apple, well under the $129 Apple Pencil Pro.

The Apple Pencil Pro is not supported, and the reason is physical rather than a software decision: the Pro charges by attaching magnetically, and the Duo has no magnetic surface for it to attach to.

Both screens accept ink

Apple says the pencil will work on the inner 7.6-inch display and the outer 5.4-inch display, for notes, sketching and marking up documents. That makes the Duo the first iPhone to take stylus input at all, and the outer-screen support is the more interesting half — a 5.4-inch canvas you can scribble a note on without unfolding the phone.

What to do if you are pre-ordering

A few practical points for US buyers:

• Do not buy the Apple Pencil Pro for this phone. It will not pair, and no update will change that.
• If you already own a USB-C Apple Pencil from an iPad, it is the same accessory — you do not need a second one.
• Wait on the purchase if you do not have one. Support lands late in 2026, and Apple has not given a firmer date than that.
• Pencil support will arrive in a software update, so keep the phone current once it ships.
