Netflix iPhone Duo App Lands 23 October, and Galaxy Z Fold Already Does Most of It
Netflix has rebuilt its iPhone app for the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, and the redesign was the app Apple chose to demonstrate on stage. The Netflix iPhone Duo app reworks three things — the Billboard carousel at the top of the home screen, the Clips vertical feed, and the video player's controls — and it arrives alongside the phone, which starts at $1,999 and ships on 23 October.
For anyone who already owns a Galaxy Z Fold or a Pixel Fold, most of what Apple showed will look familiar. Netflix on Android has done flex-mode playback for years.
What actually changes in the Netflix app on iPhone Duo?
Three pieces, all confirmed by Netflix in published reports and by Apple's own developer note.
- Playback controls that follow the hinge. Netflix says the controls adapt "no matter how you're watching — full screen, folded or propped up". Prop the Duo on a table like a tiny laptop and the video plays on the upper half while the controls drop to the lower half. The controls also carry a reflective glow that reacts to ambient light and the angle of the screen.
- Clips on the outer screen. The TikTok-style vertical feed runs on the 5.4-inch cover display. Open the phone and the title you were watching carries over to the 7.6-inch inner panel.
- A redesigned Billboard. The hero carousel reformats itself for the squarer inner display, with what Netflix describes as dynamic visual effects tied to the screen.
Apple confirmed the wider picture in a statement: its own apps are optimised for the Duo, and "third-party apps, including Netflix, Zoom, and Slack, are already taking advantage of the folding design". Notably, Apple did not demo the Apple TV app on the foldable at all.
Do Android foldables already do this?
Largely, yes. Netflix on Android supports flex mode on the Galaxy Z Fold line and on Pixel foldables: half-open the phone and the video moves to the top half with playback controls beneath it. Split-screen works, and the Clips feed is already on Android. The parts that are genuinely exclusive to the new iOS build are the motion and lighting effects — the reformatting Billboard and the glow on the controls — rather than the layout ideas themselves.
That is the part worth sitting with. Foldables have been on sale for seven years, and the app behaviour Apple presented as new is closer to catch-up than invention. Android's own multitasking work has moved further along too, with drag-to-split app handles and per-app screen zoom on the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Why the screen shape matters here
Both Duo displays use a 1.4:1 aspect ratio. A standard iPhone is 2.17:1 in landscape, which frames 16:9 video almost edge to edge. At 1.4:1 — close to the 1.43:1 IMAX ratio — widescreen films land with black bars above and below instead. The inner panel measures 7.6 inches at 1878x2670 (430 ppi); the cover screen is 5.4 inches at 1398x2034 (460 ppi). More glass does not automatically mean a bigger picture, which is exactly why the fold-aware controls and the propped-up mode are the useful additions rather than the raw size.
When can you get it, and what does it cost?
The iPhone Duo goes up for pre-order on 16 October and reaches shops on 23 October in more than 70 markets, including the US. Storage runs from 256GB at $1,999 to 2TB at $3,199 — the price we flagged when the $2,000 starting figure first surfaced. The redesigned Netflix build ships with the phone; there is no separate charge, and no change to Netflix plan pricing tied to it. Netflix subscriptions have been moving on their own schedule, as the UK price rise showed.
Every other streaming app is now on a clock. Developers have roughly a month to adapt before launch day, and Apple is pointing them at updated SDKs and iPhone Duo support in Xcode's Device Hub. Disney+, HBO Max and YouTube have all shown nothing yet.
