The Mandalorian and Grogu Hits Disney+ Today in IMAX Enhanced, 103 Days After Theaters

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is on Disney+ from today, 2 September, streaming globally at no extra cost to subscribers. The film arrives 103 days after its 22 May theatrical opening, and it streams in IMAX Enhanced with the expanded aspect ratio the format uses in cinemas.

It does not land alone. Two more Star Wars releases hit the service the same day, which makes this the biggest single-day drop the franchise has had on Disney+ this year.

What is the Mandalorian and Grogu Disney+ release getting you today?

Three things, all included with a standard subscription:

• The film itself, directed by Jon Favreau, with Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin and Sigourney Weaver as New Republic officer Colonel Ward.
• LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a new animated special from Lucasfilm that retells all three seasons of the series in comedic form. It is directed by Chris Buckley and written by Michael Price.
• The official podcast, launching at 6:00pm PT (9:00pm ET) with two episodes, "Growing Up" and "Bigger & Different". The video version sits on Disney+; the audio version is on the usual podcast apps.

What does IMAX Enhanced actually change?

Two things. The picture opens up: scenes shot for IMAX play back with more image top and bottom instead of being cropped to a standard widescreen frame, so you are seeing closer to what filled the cinema screen. The sound is remastered in IMAX Enhanced audio using DTS, tuned for a wider dynamic range than a normal home mix.

The audio half only works if your gear supports it. You need an IMAX Enhanced certified TV, receiver or soundbar to get the DTS track; without one, you still get the wider picture and a standard surround mix. The expanded framing is the part almost everyone will notice, and it needs nothing special.

Why did it take 103 days to reach streaming?

That gap is deliberate. Studios have spent the past few years settling on a theatrical window of roughly three months for tentpole films, long enough to finish a cinema run without letting interest cool before the streaming debut. Disney has been running its biggest releases at close to this length, and 103 days puts this one squarely in that band.

For comparison, the streaming side of the Star Wars slate has been moving faster than the film side. Live-action series work continues on the platform, with Ahsoka season 2 already dated, and Disney has been leaning harder on short-form and creator content too, including a TikTok-style vertical video feed inside the Disney+ app.

Do you need a specific Disney+ plan?

No. All three releases are included with a Disney+ subscription on either the ad-supported or ad-free tier. There is no premium access charge and no separate rental, which was not a given: some studio releases have arrived on their own services behind an extra fee before dropping to the standard catalogue weeks later.

Bundle subscribers are covered as well. If you get Disney+ through a package, the film shows up in the same place it does for anyone else. That has become the normal way people pay for streaming this year, alongside deals like the Apple TV and Peacock bundle.

What else is worth knowing before you press play?

Download support works as it does for any Disney+ title, so the film can be pulled onto a phone or tablet for offline viewing. The IMAX Enhanced version is the one the app serves by default on supported devices, so there is no separate listing to hunt for.

If you are working through a September watchlist, the month is unusually crowded across services. Titles are also on the way out elsewhere, including Halo leaving Netflix in the US on 1 October, and weekly releases are running on rival platforms such as Lanterns on HBO Max.
