Minecraft's Switch 2 Closed Beta Is Live, and It More Than Doubles Render Distance

Aditya Singh

A Minecraft Switch 2 closed beta is now in the hands of a small group of players, roughly two and a half months before the native Nintendo Switch 2 version goes on sale. The build is a separate download rather than an update to the existing game, and the first thing it changes is how far you can see: render distance climbs to 28 chunks, against 12 chunks on the original Switch.

How the Minecraft Switch 2 beta is being handed out

Selected players are getting a notification on the Minecraft title screen inviting them to download a separate eShop app labelled "Minecraft Closed Beta". There is no sign-up page, no waitlist and no published criteria for who gets in, and Mojang has not put out an announcement about the programme at all. If you have not seen the prompt, there is currently no known way to request access.

The build in circulation is Bedrock beta 26.50.21, which went out on 7 August and is the first Switch 2 beta version of the game. It corresponds to Preview 26.50.20 on the platforms that already have a public preview track, so the underlying feature set is not Switch 2 exclusive — the point of this build is the hardware it runs on.

What the beta actually changes

  • Render distance without Vibrant Visuals: up to 28 chunks, compared with 12 on the original Switch.
  • Render distance with Vibrant Visuals: capped at 16 chunks.
  • Vibrant Visuals is selectable in this build, which is the first time it has been playable on Nintendo hardware.
  • Point lights and volumetric block lights are absent from Vibrant Visuals in this beta, so the lighting is not yet the full version of the feature.
  • Frame rate targets 60fps, and player footage suggests it holds up with Vibrant Visuals switched off, with dips once the effect is enabled.

That last point is worth reading carefully. A beta running two and a half months before release is not a performance verdict, and the gap between the two render-distance figures suggests Mojang is still deciding how much visual overhead the console can carry. Anyone treating early beta frame rates as the shipped result is jumping ahead of the evidence.

What Mojang has confirmed about the full release

The native Switch 2 version launches on 27 October 2026, a date the studio announced on 5 August. Vibrant Visuals will be on by default, bringing directional lighting, volumetric fog and reworked shadows — with the caveat that the studio has already said it will not be available in split-screen play, in certain game modes, or in some Marketplace worlds.

Nintendo-specific content is getting attention too: the Super Mario Mash-Up pack is being updated so its textures and lighting work with Vibrant Visuals. Mojang has also said there will be an upgrade route for people who already own Minecraft on the original Switch, but has not yet explained what that involves.

What is still unanswered

Several things players will care about have not been stated by Mojang or Nintendo: the price of the Switch 2 version, whether the upgrade for existing Switch owners costs anything, whether worlds and purchases carry across automatically, and whether Joy-Con 2 mouse controls are supported. Treat any figure circulating on those points as unconfirmed.

If you are weighing up whether the visual upgrade is worth it, the PC side of Minecraft offers a useful reference point — our testing in the best Minecraft shaders for high frame rates shows how quickly lighting effects eat into performance, and Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's own attempt at the same trade-off on fixed hardware. For everything else in the game, our guide to breeding armadillos in Minecraft covers one of the fiddlier survival tasks.

Switch 2 owners setting up for October have a couple of practical jobs first. Storage is the obvious one, and this month's Oblivion Remastered Switch 2 download size is a reminder of how fast the console's internal space disappears. If you play docked, our Switch and Switch 2 TV setup guide walks through getting the output right before you start chasing 28-chunk view distances on a big screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join the Minecraft Switch 2 closed beta?

There is no application process. Selected players see a notification on the Minecraft title screen that lets them download a separate "Minecraft Closed Beta" app from the eShop. Mojang has not published the criteria for who gets an invite, and has not announced the beta programme publicly.

When does Minecraft come out on Nintendo Switch 2?

The native Switch 2 version launches on 27 October 2026. Mojang confirmed the date on 5 August 2026. A price has not been announced.

What is the render distance in Minecraft on Switch 2?

In the closed beta, render distance goes up to 28 chunks with Vibrant Visuals turned off, and is capped at 16 chunks with it turned on. The original Switch version tops out at 12 chunks. These are beta figures and could change before release.

Is the Switch 2 upgrade free if I already own Minecraft on Switch?

Mojang has said there will be an upgrade route for existing Switch owners but has not said what it costs or how it works. Until the studio publishes those details, assume nothing about pricing.

Does the Switch 2 version have Vibrant Visuals?

Yes, and it is enabled by default at launch, adding directional lighting, volumetric fog and improved shadows. Mojang has said it will not work in split-screen play, in some game modes, or in certain Marketplace worlds. In the current beta, point lights and volumetric block lights are still missing.
