Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Update 1.005.001 Reworks the Fresh Start Suit After Player Feedback

Insomniac Games has pushed a Spider-Man 2 update that reworks the Fresh Start suit, roughly ten days after adding it. Version 1.005.001 is live on PlayStation 5, and it exists almost entirely because players said the costume did not look like the one in the film it was based on. Alongside the cosmetic revisions, the patch carries general stability improvements.

What the Spider-Man 2 update changes

The revisions are narrow and specific to one cosmetic. Per the studio, update 1.005.001 makes these changes:

• The sheen is gone from the red panels. The material now reads as cloth rather than something glossy, which was the single most common complaint.
• The red is deeper. The colour has been adjusted to sit closer to the film version.
• Battle damage has been added. The suit now scuffs and tears during combat like the rest of Peter Parker's wardrobe, which it previously did not.
• A photo mode clipping bug is fixed. The suit's animated eyes clipped through the mask when emoting.
• Stability improvements. Unspecified, and bundled in as general maintenance.

Nothing here touches gameplay, mission structure or performance targets. If you have no interest in this particular suit, the practical effect of installing the patch is the stability work and nothing else.

Why players objected to the suit

The costume was added as a tie-in to the Spider-Man: Brand New Day film, and the objection was that it missed the mark on the thing tie-in cosmetics are judged on — resemblance. Players described the in-game red as reading orange under the game's lighting, with the vibrancy of the film's red and blue flattened out. The glossy finish compounded it, giving the suit a plastic look rather than a fabric one.

Insomniac's response arrived quickly by the standards of cosmetic revisions, and the studio framed the changes as directly based on player feedback. That is a fairly unusual turnaround for an optional costume in a game that shipped in 2023.

What the previous patch added

Update 1.005.001 is a follow-up to 1.005.000, which landed in late July and was the substantial one. That patch added two new suits for Peter Parker: the Fresh Start suit drawn from Brand New Day, and a costume based on Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.

More interesting technically, 1.005.000 also added Enhanced PSSR support on PS5 Pro and a Power Saver mode. PSSR is Sony's machine-learning upscaler on the Pro, and the enhanced version is a newer revision of it that Sony has been rolling into first-party titles; the practical benefit is cleaner image reconstruction, particularly on fine detail like the city's geometry at distance. Power Saver mode reduces the console's power draw, generally by capping frame rates or resolution.

If you skipped that update, installing 1.005.001 brings both patches down together, since console updates apply cumulatively.

Which platforms get it

The 1.005.001 version number is the PlayStation 5 build. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched as a PS5 exclusive in October 2023 and later came to PC, and the PC release is versioned separately, so PC players should not expect the same number to appear in their update history even where the same suit changes land.

The PS5 Pro features described above require a PS5 Pro. On a standard PS5, Enhanced PSSR does nothing — the console does not have the hardware for it. That distinction gets blurred often enough that it is worth stating plainly, and it is the same caveat that applied to the recent Silent Hill 2 patch 1.07 for PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Should you install it

There is no reason not to, and no urgency either. The patch downloads automatically if you have automatic updates enabled, and manually from the game's options menu on the PS5 dashboard otherwise. Nothing in it is required to keep playing, and no save data is affected.

The one group who will actually notice a difference is anyone who had settled on the Fresh Start suit as their default look, and anyone who spends time in photo mode, where both the material change and the eye-clipping fix are most visible.
