Apple Pulls Telegram From the App Store Over CSAM, Then Restores It Within the Hour

Apple removed Telegram from the iOS App Store late on Monday after its review team found child sexual abuse material being shared through the app, then put the listing back roughly 40 minutes later once the offending content was taken down. The app vanished from search in multiple countries during that window, but it was never removed from anyone's iPhone and it was never pulled from Google Play.

Both companies have now confirmed the sequence on the record, which is unusual — Telegram said nothing publicly for the first hour beyond a joke about reports of its demise, and the concrete explanation only landed the following morning.

What Apple and Telegram each said

Apple's statement is direct: it briefly removed Telegram after a review found content violating its guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material, and restored the app after the developer removed that content and banned the user who posted it.

Telegram's account matches on the facts and narrows the scope considerably. It says Apple reported a single user sharing CSAM and that the account was banned immediately. The company also pointed to its wider enforcement numbers, saying it has removed more than 337,900 groups and channels connected to CSAM so far in 2026.

Neither side has described this as a dispute. On the available statements, this was a takedown that lasted as long as it took one account and its content to be removed.

Reconciling the conflicting timings

Coverage on the night and coverage the next morning do not quite line up, and it is worth being precise about why.

• Reports of the app going missing began circulating around 9:30 PM ET on Monday.
• Telegram said publicly that the app had been restored and "should soon be available again for all users" — wording that was accurate about the listing but ahead of what users could actually see.
• Direct App Store links were still returning error pages in several regions at that point, which is why reporting published late Monday described the app as still unavailable.
• The listing was back around 10:10 PM ET, and full propagation followed.

That lag is normal App Store behaviour rather than a second outage: storefront caches and regional search indexes update at different speeds, so a restored app can stay invisible in some countries for a while after it is technically live again.

Who was actually affected

The practical impact was narrower than the headlines suggested. To be clear about what was and was not touched:

• Existing iPhone and iPad users — unaffected. Telegram kept working, messages kept arriving, and nothing was deleted from any device.
• New iOS downloads and reinstalls — blocked during the window, in every country where the listing had dropped out of search.
• Mac App Store — unaffected throughout.
• Android — completely unaffected. Telegram stayed on Google Play the entire time.

An app pulled from the App Store does not disappear from phones that already have it. Removal blocks new installs and, if it lasts, blocks updates — neither of which had time to matter here.

If you still cannot find it

The listing is live again, so anyone still hitting a dead end is almost certainly looking at a cached result rather than a missing app. Force-close the App Store from the app switcher and reopen it, then search again. Failing that, sign out and back into your Apple Account, or restart the device to clear the local storefront cache.

Reinstalling from your purchase history is the more reliable route in any case: open the App Store, tap your profile picture, choose Purchased, and pull Telegram down from there rather than relying on search.

Why a 40-minute removal still matters

Apple has done this before — it pulled Telegram in 2018 over inappropriate content, in an episode that ran along much the same lines. The recurrence is the point: on iOS, a single reviewer's finding can put one of the world's largest messaging apps out of distribution in every country at once, with no intermediate step between "listed" and "gone".

That leverage is exactly what the ongoing fight over alternative app distribution is about, and critics of Apple's control seized on the incident within hours.
