Valheim 1.0 went live on 9 September 2026, ending more than five years of early access and putting the Viking survival game on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. The same build lands on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and the base price moves from $19.99 to $29.99 on every digital storefront.

What Valheim 1.0 adds, and which platforms get it

The headline addition is the Deep North, the frozen biome Iron Gate has been holding back since the early-access roadmap first appeared. It arrives with new enemies, new weapons and a fresh set of building pieces, and it closes out the progression chain that has ended at the Mistlands for most players.

The platform list is now six wide: PC, Mac and Linux, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2. PS5 and Switch 2 are the new arrivals. There is no version for the original Nintendo Switch, and Iron Gate has not said one is planned.

Crossplay is the part that changes how people actually play. Version 1.0 ships with full cross-platform play across all six platforms, so a PS5 player, a Switch 2 player and someone on a Steam Deck can share one world without anyone running a separate server build. The Switch 2 eShop listing spells out the same co-op ceiling the game has always had: 1 to 10 players online.

How much Valheim costs now

The price rise was announced ahead of launch and takes effect with 1.0. The game was $19.99 through early access; it is $29.99 now, a 50% increase, with regional pricing varying as usual. Iron Gate framed it as reflecting five years of added content rather than a change in what the game is.

Anyone who bought Valheim during early access keeps it. The console versions are separate purchases in their own stores — buying on Steam does not give you the PS5 or Switch 2 build, and there is no cross-buy arrangement between them.

Is Valheim on Game Pass?

No. Valheim was on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass for a stretch after its Xbox debut, but it left the service on 30 September 2024 and did not return for the 1.0 launch. To play it on Xbox you buy it from the Microsoft Store. Subscribers who want to know what did land this month can check our rundown of the Game Pass September wave.

Download size and Switch 2 details

Valheim has always been unusually small for a survival sandbox, and that has not changed: the Switch 2 eShop lists the download at 210 MB. That is an outlier next to the 30GB-plus downloads normal on the platform — for contrast, see how much space Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter needs on Switch 2.

The eShop listing also confirms the practical Switch 2 features:

  • TV, tabletop and handheld modes
  • Touch screen support
  • Online co-op for 1 to 10 players
  • Cross-platform play with the other five platforms
  • Save Data Cloud, which requires Nintendo Switch Online
  • Nintendo Account family group lending

Coffee Stain publishes the console versions; Iron Gate Studio remains the developer.

What is still unconfirmed

Iron Gate has not committed to a date for the Ocean biome, which has been discussed for years but is not part of the 1.0 package. Treat anything you see about post-launch biome timing as unconfirmed until the studio posts it. Performance targets for the Switch 2 and PS5 builds — resolution, frame rate caps, handheld behaviour — were also not published in the launch material.

The timing puts Valheim in a busy week. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Valheim on Game Pass?

No. Valheim left Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on 30 September 2024 and did not return for the 1.0 launch. On Xbox you have to buy it from the Microsoft Store, and the same applies on PlayStation 5 and the Switch 2 eShop.

How much does Valheim cost after 1.0?

The base price is $29.99, up from $19.99 during early access, with regional pricing varying by store. Anyone who bought it in early access keeps the game and pays nothing extra for 1.0. Each console version is a separate purchase in that platform's own store.

Does Valheim have crossplay between PS5, Switch 2, Xbox and PC?

Yes. Version 1.0 ships with full cross-platform play across all six supported platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. Online worlds support 1 to 10 players regardless of which platform each person is on.

How big is the Valheim download on Switch 2?

The Nintendo eShop lists the Switch 2 download at 210 MB, which is tiny by current console standards. Valheim generates its world procedurally rather than shipping large pre-built assets, which is why it has always installed small on PC too.

Is Valheim coming to the original Nintendo Switch?

No. The Nintendo release is a Switch 2 title only, and Iron Gate has not announced a version for the original Switch. There is also no cross-buy between the console stores, so a purchase on one platform does not carry to another.
