College Football 27 Is Free on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, No Subscription Needed

EA Sports College Football 27 is free to play in full on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S until Sunday, September 6, and you do not need PS Plus, Game Pass or EA Play to start it. Every mode is open for the length of the trial, and any progress you make carries into the paid game if you buy it afterwards.

EA has pinned the promotion to National College Colors Day, which falls on the Friday before Labor Day and functions as the informal start of the college football season. The window opened on Wednesday, September 3.

What the College Football 27 free weekend actually unlocks

This is the retail build, not a cut-down demo or a timed two-hour sampler. EA's own promotional page names the modes it wants people to try:

• Dynasty Blueprint — the reworked programme-building mode that anchors this year's release.
• Road to Glory — including the new player positions added for College Football 27.
• Mascot Mashup — the arcade-flavoured side mode.

The only real limit is the clock. Once Sunday passes, the install stops launching unless you have bought a licence for it.

Which platforms it covers

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and nothing else. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version of this trial, and no PC entry — the free window is a console promotion. On PlayStation it runs as a standalone free-play period rather than a PS Plus perk, so lapsed subscribers can still download it. On Xbox it arrives through Free Play Days, which normally gates its games behind a Game Pass tier; College Football 27 is the exception this week and is open to everyone.

Three other games joined the same Xbox rotation. The Survivalists is unlocked for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. The Lonesome Guild and Under the Waves are open without a Game Pass membership but are capped at two-hour timed trials, which is a much smaller offer than the football game. Two more games are free on Steam at the same time

Valve is running its own free weekend in parallel, and the end times do not match. Civilization 7 is playable at no cost until September 10 at 10 a.m. PT — Firaxis and Valve extended it past the usual Sunday cut-off because a single campaign can run for days. First Class Trouble, the social-deduction game, ends earlier, on September 7 at 10 a.m. PT.

Both carry a discount if you decide to keep playing. Civilization 7 is 50% off at $34.99 and First Class Trouble is 70% off at $4.49, with both prices holding until September 17.

Does your progress carry over?

Yes, according to published reports on the promotion: saves and progression made during the free window transfer to the full game on the same platform and account. That is the practical difference between a free-play weekend and a demo, and it is the reason starting a Dynasty Blueprint run now is not wasted effort. EA has not published a cut-off for how long that save data is retained if you never buy the game, so treat it as tied to your account rather than guaranteed indefinitely.

EA has form here with its other sports titles. NHL 27's early access ran through a 10-hour EA Play trial rather than an open weekend, and Madden NFL 27 unlocked on a single global release time with no free period at all. A no-subscription weekend across both consoles is the more generous version of the pattern.
