What is left of the Temple Run family?

What are games like Temple Run called? Most people call them endless runners, or infinite runners. Temple Run’s own twist is a behind-the-back 3D view with corners. Wikipedia’s series page lists nine main Temple Run games, and only some are still around:

Imangi Studios, the maker, lists only two games on its US Google Play developer page: Temple Run and Temple Run 2.
Disney’s Oz and Brave were retired on 31 October 2017, DisKingdom reported.
Temple Run 3 began a test release in late 2025, per PocketGamer.biz. We could not find it on Google Play in any of its four test countries, or in the US.
Together, Temple Run and Temple Run 2 have more than two billion downloads, says the same report.

What makes Temple Run “Temple Run”?

Many lists say “endless runner” and stop. Temple Run has four things that most copies skip:

You turn corners. You swipe left or right at bends in the path. The listing says “swipe to turn.” Subway Surfers uses three lanes instead.
Something is chasing you. A Demon Monkey, in Temple Run’s own listing.
Behind-the-back camera. You see the runner from behind.
It works offline. Both listings say no internet is needed.

Why only 90-degree turns? Wikipedia says early tests with a rotating view made players dizzy, so turns are limited to 90 degrees.

How we checked these games

On 4 October 2026 we opened every game’s live US Google Play page. We wrote down price, ads label, shop range, score, ratings, age rating and update date. Update dates can be one day off, depending on your time zone.
We read the pages that rank for this search, plus Bing’s results and AI summary. None showed an update date for each game. One alternatives page still lists Temple Run 3, which is not on the US store.
Only the two Temple Run listings say “swipe to turn.” The “style” labels for the other games are our own, based on their listings and the usual meaning of each genre.
For every “gone” game, we opened its Google Play page and got “not found,” beside a working control page. For shutdown dates we used the companies’ own notices or news reports.
We played none of these games. Ratings are from Google Play, and iPhone data is from Apple’s public store listing.
Of the 14 picks, 14 carry the “Contains ads” label. Check each listing before you hand one to a child.

Watch out: The lowest score of the big names here (4.07), though it still has 9.8 million ratings.

Best for: the real thing, updated in September. Skip if: you already know it and want something new.

Watch out: Simpler than the sequel, but it has the higher score (4.23).

Best for: the ancient-ruins feel of Temple Run, with more to do. Skip if: you want a pure one-thumb runner.

Search “old games like Temple Run” and you will find the 2012 classics. Here is what happened to them. We also saw lookalikes that use the Temple Run name on Google Play, with only a few thousand installs. We did not list those.
