Onimusha: Way of the Sword Needs 50GB and an SSD on PC, and Lands September 4

Aditya Singh

Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives on Friday, 4 September, and the PC requirements the publisher has posted on Steam are modest by 2026 standards: a GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 5500 XT, 16GB of RAM, and 50GB of storage that has to sit on an SSD. The game launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, and the first reviews went up on Monday, four days ahead of release.

It is the first new Onimusha in more than twenty years, built around a young Miyamoto Musashi in an Edo-era Kyoto overrun by Genma. Capcom is both developer and publisher.

What the Onimusha: Way of the Sword PC requirements ask for

Capcom lists two tiers, and unusually it says what frame rate each one buys you. Both assume upscaling is switched on, so these are not native-resolution numbers.

  • Minimum — Windows 11, Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100, 16GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB) or Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB), DirectX 12, 50GB on an SSD. Target: 30fps on the Low preset at 1080p.
  • Recommended — Windows 11, Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, GeForce RTX 2060 Super (8GB) or Radeon RX 6600 (8GB), DirectX 12, 50GB on an SSD. Target: 60fps on the Medium preset at 1080p.

Two details are worth pulling out. Windows 11 is the only listed operating system at either tier, so Windows 10 holdouts have no supported configuration. And the SSD note is not a suggestion — Capcom states it as a requirement, the same way Fable's PC specs demand an SSD for its 135GB install.

Upscaling runs on NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 3.1. Capcom's estimates were made against DLSS 4.0 and FSR 3.1, so the shipped DLSS version should land slightly ahead of the published figures rather than behind them.

How big is the download on consoles

The 50GB figure is the PC number, taken from the Steam listing. Capcom has not published install sizes for PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2, and cross-platform sizes rarely match — Switch 2 ports in particular tend to land well under their PC counterparts, as Oblivion Remastered's 61.5GB Switch 2 download showed when it came in below expectations for a cartridge release. Treat 50GB as a PC-only figure until the console store pages update.

Release date, price and the three editions

Capcom moved the game forward from 25 September to 4 September back in July, after feedback on the demo. One wrinkle: the Steam store page currently shows 3 September, a day earlier than the date in Capcom's own announcement, so PC players should watch the store countdown rather than assume a midnight local unlock on the 4th.

Three editions are listed on Steam:

  • Standard — $69.99
  • Deluxe Edition — $79.99
  • Premium Deluxe Edition — $89.99

None of them buys early access. There is no three-day or five-day head start attached to the more expensive tiers, so everyone starts on the same day. On PC the game is single-player, has full controller support, Steam Cloud saves and HDR output.

The bonus you do not have to pre-order for

When Capcom pulled the date forward, it converted the digital pre-order bonus into an Early Adopter Bonus that stays available for three weeks after launch. The cut-off is 25 September at 4:59pm PDT, 7:59pm EDT, or 00:59 BST on 26 September.

That is the useful part of the date change and it has been largely buried: buying at any point in the first three weeks gets the same digital bonus a pre-order would have. Waiting for reviews costs you nothing.

There is a demo, and a separate benchmark tool

A demo has been on Steam for months and Capcom expanded it on 26 August, adding content past the duel with Sasaki Ganryu that ended the original build. Capcom also lists a standalone Onimusha: Way of the Sword Benchmark app on Steam, up since 13 July, which is the more reliable way to find out whether your machine clears the bar before spending $69.99.

If you are budgeting your September, the game lands the day after PlayStation's State of Play on 3 September, and one week before the wave of autumn releases proper. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the PC requirements for Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

The minimum spec is Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 3 3100, 16GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB) or Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB), targeting 30fps on Low at 1080p with upscaling. The recommended spec steps up to an i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600 and an RTX 2060 Super (8GB) or RX 6600 (8GB) for 60fps on Medium at 1080p. Both tiers need 50GB of space on an SSD.

How big is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Capcom lists 50GB on PC, and states that the install has to be on an SSD rather than a hard drive. Download sizes for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 have not been published yet, so the 50GB figure should not be assumed to carry over to consoles.

When does Onimusha: Way of the Sword come out?

Capcom has confirmed Friday, 4 September 2026, brought forward from an original date of 25 September. The Steam store page currently lists 3 September, a day earlier, so PC players should check the store countdown for their own region. It releases the same day on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword on Nintendo Switch 2?

Yes. Switch 2 is one of the four launch platforms alongside PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it releases on the same day rather than later. Capcom has not published a Switch 2 file size or performance target.

Do I need to pre-order to get the bonus?

No. Capcom converted the digital pre-order bonus into an Early Adopter Bonus when it moved the release date up. It stays available until 25 September at 4:59pm PDT, 7:59pm EDT, or 00:59 BST on 26 September, so a purchase in the first three weeks after launch still qualifies.
