Overwatch Doctrine Hero Trial Ends September 14, and One Match Now Earns a Free Mythic Skin

Blizzard's new Support hero Doctrine is playable right now in a limited-time Overwatch hero trial that runs until September 14, three weeks before he joins the roster for good in Season 5 on October 6. At the same time, every player who finishes one match after Saturday's BlizzCon opening ceremony earns a free Mythic Voucher that unlocks a full Mythic skin bundle of their choice.

Both were announced on stage at BlizzCon 2026 on September 12 and confirmed in Blizzard's own Overwatch news post. The trial is a short window, and the voucher has a deadline, so here is what you need to do and by when.

How long is the Overwatch Doctrine hero trial?

The trial started during the BlizzCon opening ceremony on Saturday, September 12, and Blizzard says it runs through September 14. That gives players roughly the whole BlizzCon weekend plus Monday. Blizzard's post does not give an exact cut-off hour or time zone, so treat Monday as the last day and do not leave it until late in the evening.

After the trial closes, Doctrine disappears from the hero select screen until Season 5 launches on October 6. At that point he becomes a permanent part of the roster. Blizzard has not said he will be locked behind the battle pass, and the trial itself costs nothing.

Overwatch is sold on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. The announcement does not exclude any platform from the trial.

What does Doctrine do?

Blizzard describes Doctrine as a vampire-inspired Support who manipulates lifeforce with a scepter, infusions and bat-like drones. In the story he is an ally of Doomfist, who broke him out of a prison in Iceland. The kit shown in the trial works like this:

• Eternal Scepter (weapon): a mid-range shot that heals allies and damages enemies.
• Infuse: adds a stronger effect to your next ability, which is the core of how he plays.
• Shrouded Momentum: a horizontal dash with damage reduction. Infused, it grants free flight.
• Invigorating Drones: sends drones to an ally for attack speed and healing. Infused, you also get drones yourself.
• Deliverance (ultimate): a drone swarm that cuts enemy maximum health and gives allies overhealth.

His passive falls under the Survivor subrole, so using a movement ability starts passive health regeneration. Numbers may change before October 6, because a trial is exactly where Blizzard collects feedback ahead of a hero's full launch.

How to claim the free Mythic Voucher

This is the part most players will care about. Blizzard's instructions are simple: play one game after the BlizzCon opening ceremony and the voucher is added to your account.

• What it unlocks: one complete Mythic skin bundle of your choice from Seasons 1 to 14.
• Deadline to redeem: October 5, the day before Season 5 starts.
• If you already own every eligible Mythic: you get 50 Mythic Prisms instead.

The October 5 date is the catch. You cannot hold the voucher for a Mythic skin that arrives in a later season, so pick from the existing pool before the deadline. Any game counts, so a single Quick Play match during the Doctrine trial covers both at once.

What else is coming in Overwatch Season 5

Doctrine is not the only Season 5 change Blizzard confirmed. The October 6 update also brings:

• A new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, set in the Icelandic volcano prison Doctrine escaped from.
• A major Sombra rework that moves her from the Damage role to Support.
• A major Roadhog rework, with details still to come.

Blizzard also teased a clue for the hero after Doctrine and said the Overwatch Spotlight showcase returns in February 2027 with a year-long roadmap. It has not given ability details for either rework yet.
