Physint Moves to Xbox After Sony Cancelled It in June
Physint, the action-espionage game Hideo Kojima announced on a PlayStation stage in 2024, will now be published by Xbox Game Studios. Xbox confirmed the deal on 10 September, and Sony Interactive Entertainment has separately confirmed it is no longer involved. Neither company has named the platforms Physint will actually launch on.

What Xbox actually confirmed about Physint
Xbox's announcement says the company is expanding its existing partnership with Kojima Productions to publish Physint. That partnership already covers the horror game OD, which the two studios have been co-developing. The new agreement also stretches beyond games into film and television.
Asha Sharma, who leads Xbox, framed it as Kojima choosing where to take the project. Kojima said the deal expands the relationship past OD and that the studio is still aiming to redefine the action-espionage genre. That is the whole of it. There is no release date, no release window, no price, no platform list and no word on whether Physint will be included with Game Pass at launch.
Why Sony stepped away
Physint was revealed during a PlayStation State of Play on 31 January 2024, presented as a Kojima Productions project made with Sony. Kojima has now said that a notice arrived from SIE in mid-June 2026 stating the project had been cancelled. Development itself never stopped. He describes roughly three months of searching before settling on Xbox.
PlayStation Studios has confirmed its exit in its own words, calling it "the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS" while saying it still admires Kojima's vision for the game. Sony also stressed that its wider relationship with Kojima, which runs back roughly three decades, is intact. Death Stranding remains a Sony-published series and nothing announced this week changes that.
Is Physint still coming to PS5?
Nobody has said it is not. But nobody has said it is, either, and Sony is no longer the publisher, so the PS5 version that was implied by the 2024 State of Play reveal no longer has a company attached to it. Kojima Productions owns the IP and Xbox is now funding and publishing the game.
Recent Xbox-published titles have shipped on PS5 as well, so a multiplatform release is plausible. Treat it as unconfirmed. Here is the split as it stands:
- Confirmed: Xbox Game Studios publishes Physint; Kojima Productions develops it; Sony is out.
- Confirmed: the Xbox and Kojima Productions partnership now covers film and TV as well as games.
- Confirmed: OD, the horror project with Xbox, continues.
- Not confirmed: platforms, including whether Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5 or cloud are in scope.
- Not confirmed: release window, price, and Game Pass day-one status.
What this changes for players right now
Practically, nothing this month. Physint has never had a release date and it still does not have one, so there is nothing to pre-order and nothing to wishlist on a store page. What changed is who pays for it and who decides where it ships.
The Game Pass question is the one worth watching. Xbox Game Studios titles have gone to the service on day one as a rule, and if that holds, Physint would arrive there whenever it launches. The service itself has been moving around lately: our rundown of the Game Pass September wave and what is leaving covers the current line-up, and Microsoft has also set out new monthly hour limits for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Ultimate.
On the hardware side, the console this would eventually run on is also in flux. There is a circulating price leak for an anniversary Xbox Series X25, still unconfirmed by Microsoft. And if you are playing on a phone in the meantime, our guide to connecting a PS5 controller to Android is the fastest way to get a proper gamepad working with cloud streaming.
How unusual is this?
Publishers cancel funded projects regularly. What is unusual is a project of this profile surviving the cancellation with its development team intact and finding a rival platform holder as a new backer inside three months. It is also the second Kojima Productions game to land at Xbox, after OD, which makes the studio one of the few working with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo audiences at the same time.
The next real information will be a platform list. Until Xbox publishes one, anything you read about Physint being an Xbox exclusive, or about a PS5 version being safe, is guesswork.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Physint still coming to PS5?
It is unconfirmed. Sony Interactive Entertainment cancelled its involvement in June 2026 and is no longer the publisher, and Xbox has not named any platforms for the game. A PS5 version is possible because several Xbox-published titles now ship there too, but no company has committed to one.
Will Physint be on Game Pass?
Xbox has not said. Xbox Game Studios titles have generally launched into Game Pass on day one, so it is a reasonable expectation, but there is no confirmation and no release date to attach it to yet.
Why did Sony cancel Physint?
Sony has not given a reason. PlayStation Studios said only that it made the difficult decision to step away from the collaboration and that it still admires Kojima's vision. Kojima says the cancellation notice arrived in mid-June 2026 and that development continued regardless.
When does Physint come out?
There is no release date and no release window. Physint was revealed in January 2024 and has never had one. Xbox said only that it will share more as development progresses.
Does this affect OD or Death Stranding?
OD continues; it is the Kojima Productions horror project already being made with Xbox, and this deal expands that partnership. Death Stranding is unaffected and remains a Sony-published series.
