PlayStation Store Top Downloads: Madden NFL 27 Led PS5 in the US, Black Ops II in Europe

Sony has published the PlayStation Store top downloads for August, and the PS5 chart splits cleanly along regional lines. EA Sports Madden NFL 27 was the most-downloaded PS5 game in the US and Canada, while Call of Duty: Black Ops II finished first across Europe. The lists cover PS5, PS4, PS VR2 and free-to-play, and they count PlayStation Store purchases only.

That last detail matters more than it sounds. Sony's footnotes state that upgrades are not included, and that the VR2 chart excludes games bundled with hardware. A game that sold well as a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade, or that came in a headset bundle, does not show up here.

What topped the PlayStation Store top downloads on PS5

Madden's first place in North America is the least surprising result on the page — the NFL season starts in September, and the game launched in August. Our Madden NFL 27 release time breakdown covers the staggered unlocks that got people playing before the month was out. Europe ignored it entirely; Madden does not appear in the EU top 10 at all.

PS5 in the US and Canada, in order:

  • EA Sports Madden NFL 27
  • MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  • No More Room in Hell 2
  • Hell Let Loose: Vietnam
  • EA Sports College Football 27
  • Minecraft
  • Halo: Campaign Evolved
  • Palworld
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops

The PS5 top 10 in Europe looks nothing like it

Only four games appear on both regional PS5 charts: Black Ops II, Minecraft, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam and the original Black Ops. Everything else diverges. Europe put two Ubisoft back-catalogue re-releases in the top four and pushed Grand Theft Auto V back into seventh place, more than a decade after release.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  • Minecraft
  • Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
  • The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition for PS5
  • Hell Let Loose: Vietnam
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Star Wars Zero Company
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Two of those had a rough month technically rather than commercially. Black Flag Resynced needed a sizeable September patch, which we broke down in our Black Flag Resynced update 1.0.7 file size guide, and Hell Let Loose: Vietnam arrived on a single global unlock that caught some buyers out — the timings are in our Hell Let Loose: Vietnam release time guide.

PS4 downloads are almost entirely back catalogue

Nothing on either PS4 chart is new. The US and Canada list runs Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, Red Dead Redemption 2, Gang Beasts, Batman: Arkham Knight, Dying Light, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, The Forest, Minecraft and Call of Duty: WWII.

Europe's PS4 chart contains nine of those same ten games in a different order, led by Assassin's Creed Odyssey, with Mortal Kombat X taking the tenth slot instead of a second Ghost Recon entry. Sixteen-year-old hardware, and the pattern is stable across both regions: cheap, long, single-player games.

PS VR2 and free-to-play

The PS VR2 chart is short and largely identical between regions, with Synapse, I Am Cat, Bootstrap Island, Beat Saber, Job Simulator, Pavlov, Among Us 3D: VR, Arizona Sunshine VR 2 and Moss VR trading places. Synapse led in the US and Canada; I Am Cat led in Europe.

Free-to-play barely moved. Fortnite and Roblox took first and second in both regions, followed by Once Human, then Marvel Rivals and Rocket League swapping third and fourth depending on where you look. Rainbow Six Siege Free Access, Call of Duty: Warzone and Fall Guys fill the middle. Apex Legends and eFootball round out North America; eFootball and Asphalt Legends do the same in Europe.

Four of those ten are also on phones, which is where a lot of their playtime actually happens. If you are running them on Android with a pad, our list of Android games with tested gamepad support is the place to start.

What the charts do not tell you

These are download counts, not revenue, and free-to-play titles are ranked in their own list precisely because they would otherwise flatten everything else. Sony does not publish unit numbers alongside them, so a first place and a tenth place could be very close or very far apart.

They also exclude upgrades, which quietly removes a chunk of PS5 activity from the picture, and they say nothing about games people played through a subscription rather than bought — this month's additions are in our PS Plus September line-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the top free-to-play game on PlayStation in August?

Fortnite was first and Roblox second in both the US and Canada chart and the European chart. Once Human placed third in both regions, with Marvel Rivals and Rocket League swapping fourth and fifth depending on the region.
