Prime Gaming Free Games: Doom Eternal Is a Microsoft Store Code on September 17

Prime Gaming free games for September run to 11 PC titles this month, and the one most people are waiting on is Doom Eternal, which drops on 17 September as a Microsoft Store code rather than a launcher unlock. Every title is PC-only, spread across the Epic Games Store, GOG, the Microsoft Store and Amazon's own Games app, and each arrives on a staggered Thursday rather than all at once.

Amazon splits the month into four waves. Two games landed on 3 September, three more on 10 September, three arrive on 17 September and the final three on 24 September. Claiming is tied to an active Prime membership, but the games stay in your library afterwards even if the membership lapses.

The store matters more than usual here, because four different redemption paths are in play and a GOG or Microsoft code has to be entered manually on that storefront. The full list:

• 3 September — War Hospital and Just Die Already, both Epic Games Store
• 10 September — Drop Duchy and Botany Manor on the Epic Games Store, plus Doom + Doom II as a GOG code
• 17 September — Doom Eternal as a Microsoft Store code, Rims Racing on the Epic Games Store, and Wall World 2 through the Amazon Games app
• 24 September — Hue and High on Life on the Epic Games Store, and The Da Vinci Cryptex as a Legacy Games code

Doom + Doom II is the fuller of the two Doom offers in terms of content. The GOG release bundles the TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment expansions alongside the original DOS builds, which is the version modders actually want.

What the Doom Eternal code does and does not include

The 17 September drop covers the base game only. Both parts of The Ancient Gods campaign are excluded, so anyone expecting the full post-launch story will still have to buy those separately. It is also a Microsoft Store code, which means the game lands in the Microsoft Store library on Windows rather than on Steam — a distinction worth knowing before you go looking for it in the wrong launcher.

That also makes it a genuinely free permanent copy rather than a rotation entry. Subscription line-ups work differently: titles added in the September Game Pass wave leave again when the licence expires, and trial promotions such as this weekend's Xbox Free Play Days end on a fixed date. A claimed Prime code does not.

How long you have to claim them

Amazon published the arrival dates but not a single expiry date covering every title, and offers have historically rolled off the claims page at different times. The safe approach is to claim each game on the day it appears, whether or not you plan to install it. Claiming takes seconds; recovering an offer that has rotated out takes nothing at all, because you cannot.

One practical note for the code-based titles. A Microsoft, GOG or Legacy Games code is issued to your Amazon account and then redeemed on the other storefront, so the game only reaches your library once you complete that second step. Leaving the code unredeemed is the most common way people think they have claimed something and later find they have not.

Why the Epic-heavy line-up is the norm now

Seven of the 11 games this month go through the Epic Games Store, which has become Amazon's default distribution route for PC giveaways. Epic has been pushing its store outward on several fronts at once, including the Epic Games Store launch on iPhone in Brazil, and the Prime tie-in gives it a steady stream of new accounts.

None of the 11 titles is available on Android or iOS. The smaller titles worth a look

Botany Manor is a quiet first-person puzzle game about growing plants from research notes, and it takes a single evening. Just Die Already comes from the Goat Simulator team and is a physics sandbox built around elderly characters causing damage. Drop Duchy is a roguelite that crosses block-dropping with card battles, and War Hospital is a grim First World War triage management sim.

High on Life, arriving on 24 September, is the largest of the later drops — a comedy shooter with talking guns that originally launched as an Xbox day-one title. Hue is a colour-swapping puzzle platformer, and The Da Vinci Cryptex is a short puzzle adventure delivered through Legacy Games rather than a mainstream launcher.

Prime Gaming resets on the first Thursday of each month, so the October line-up should be announced in the first days of the month. Anything not claimed by then is gone.
