Switch-back methods that no longer work
Most "how to get Google Assistant back" guides still list three routes. All three came from Google's own help pages, and all three lead to the same choice that has now been taken away:
- Gemini app menu: Gemini app > Menu > profile picture > Switch to Google Assistant. This is the entry reported missing on September 28.
- Google app settings: Google app > profile picture > Settings > Google Assistant > Digital assistants from Google. The screen for choosing between Gemini and Assistant has been reported removed from the Google app as well.
- Android Settings: Settings > Apps > Assistant > Digital assistants from Google. This lands on the same Google choice, so it has nothing left to switch to.
Two things to know before you try anything else:
- Google's help pages are behind the app. When checked on October 3, Google's Gemini Apps Help pages for Android still described tapping "Switch to Google Assistant." On updated phones that button no longer exists. Go by what your app shows.
- Rolling back or sideloading the Google app is not a supported fix. Google has not published any way to restore Assistant on a phone once it has been removed, and its notice describes the removal as final. Uninstalling Google app updates also strips out bug and security fixes.
What you can still do instead
You cannot bring Assistant back to your phone, but Google's "Manage or delete the Gemini app" help page lists several ways to control Gemini. Menu names vary by phone maker.
Stop Gemini opening from the power button
Open Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button and pick a different action, such as the power menu. On phones that do not have this path, search Settings for "power," "side button" or "gesture." On Samsung Galaxy phones, the side button settings also let you assign Bixby instead.
Turn off "Hey Google"
In the Gemini app, tap Menu > your profile picture > Settings > Talk to Gemini hands-free and turn off "Hey Google." You can still open Gemini manually.
Stop Gemini answering on the lock screen
In the Gemini app, go to Settings > Gemini on lock screen and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
Change or remove the default assistant
Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app. You can pick another installed assistant app or None. "Google" there now means Gemini. Google notes that deleting the Gemini app on its own does not remove Gemini as your default assistant, so change this setting too if you want Gemini fully out of the way.
Use Assistant where it still runs
A Nest speaker or display, a Google TV or a car with Google built-in still answers with Google Assistant. If you rely on Assistant for timers, smart home control or routines, those devices are the remaining place to use it for now.
Which devices keep Google Assistant, and which lose it?
The removal covers your phone and anything that gets its assistant from the phone. Devices with Assistant built in are not affected yet. Google's Gemini help page says Google Assistant "will continue to respond" on smart displays, smart speakers, TVs, cars and Pixel Tablets that are locked, including in Hub Mode.

Why Google removed the option
Google first said in March 2025 that the classic Assistant would stop being available on most mobile devices and that phones, tablets, cars and paired devices would move to Gemini. The cutoff slipped into 2026. In August 2026 Google emailed users that removal would begin in early September and take a few weeks to reach everyone. Google says Gemini is not available for every language, device, account or location, and that "Hey Google" and some former Assistant features are not available everywhere or for supervised accounts. Parents manage Gemini for children under 13 through Family Link.
How we verified this
On October 3, 2026, we checked Google's Gemini Apps Help pages ("Get started with the Gemini mobile app" and "Manage or delete the Gemini app on your Android device"), Google's March 2025 announcement on its official blog, and public reports dated September 28 that the switch-back option is missing in Google app 17.60 and 17.62. Google has not published a separate statement confirming the rollout is complete in every country, so phones in some regions or on unsupported hardware may still show Assistant for now.
Bottom line
There is no way back to Google Assistant on an Android phone, tablet, watch or phone-projected Android Auto, and any guide showing a "Switch to Google Assistant" button is out of date. The best you can do is limit Gemini (power button, "Hey Google," lock screen, default assistant) and keep using Assistant on Nest devices and Google built-in cars while it lasts.
