Marathon's September 22 Update Is Delayed to December 8, With a Progression Reset on October 6
The Marathon update Bungie had scheduled for September 22 is delayed to December 8, where its content will ship as a larger update called Symbiosis. In the gap, a smaller update on October 6 wipes progression and the in-game economy for every player on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The studio also says players have asked for more depth, more variety and stronger long-term progression, and that meeting those requests means changing both what it builds and how it ships it. Hence the end of the strict seasonal schedule: major updates will no longer be tied to fixed deadlines, so features can be tested for longer before release.
What the October 6 Nightfall refresh resets
The October update is deliberately small. Bungie lists four parts:
- A progression and economy reset, which it describes as a fresh starting point for all players
- A new Rewards Pass
- Quality-of-life improvements
- Live tuning and balance changes
The Vault Breaker PvE activity also returns for a limited time. Bungie says it wants data on how PvE fits into progression a few weeks after a reset, and that the results will shape PvE's future in the game. After that, the studio plans eight weeks of gameplay experiments between October and December.
What the announcement does not say matters just as much. Bungie has not spelled out whether cosmetics, purchased items or Rewards Pass unlocks survive the wipe, has not priced the new Rewards Pass, and has not given a launch time for either update. Until it does, assume only what it has stated: progression and the economy go back to zero.
