Open world is the most mislabelled genre on Google Play. Half the lists ranking for this search still recommend games whose listings return a 404, still price the Rockstar catalogue as if nothing changed in 2025, and still call a fast-travel mission menu a world.
So we gave every pick a structural verdict, published the storage figures the developers themselves state, and named the games you cannot install at all. Every link here points at a listing we opened on 26 August 2026.

Is this actually open world? Our four-verdict test
Every pick on this page gets one of four structural verdicts. This is the part no other list runs, and it is the reason half of them recommend games that are not open worlds at all.
- True open world. One continuous space. You can walk from one edge of the content to the other without a loading screen or a level gate. Minecraft, GTA: San Andreas, Genshin Impact.
- Mission-hub sandbox. A real explorable map exists, but the game is built around missions you launch from a hub or a menu, and fast travel does most of the moving. Gangstar Vegas, Botworld Adventure, Oceanhorn.
- Free-roam mode bolted onto a linear game. The city is an arena for scored events. Roaming is a mode, not the point. Payback 2 is the clearest example.
- Instanced zones, not a world. Separate maps joined by loading screens or a travel menu. Sky: Children of the Light, Diablo Immortal, Last Day on Earth.
A mission-hub verdict is not a disqualification. A bad game is. What we will not do is put an instanced-zone game in a numbered open-world ranking and bury the truth in a footnote.

Storage reality: the published figures, not the guesses
Google Play stopped showing a fixed download size for most big games, so the number in the store tells you almost nothing. A 300 MB install can become a 40 GB game on first launch. That is Play Asset Delivery working as designed, and it is explained in Google’s own developer documentation: the app ships as a small shell and pulls its asset packs afterwards.
Here are the free-space figures the developers themselves publish. Use these, not the download size.

The most repeated wrong number on this topic is “Genshin Impact needs 110 GB on Android”. It does not.
HoYoverse lists 110 GB for the PC build, and roughly 40 GB free as the Android minimum on its system requirements page. The other common error runs the opposite way: several fresh 2026 articles still say “30 GB+”, which is below the official floor.
One practical consequence. If your phone has 64 GB of total storage, Genshin Impact and Where Winds Meet are not really options, no matter what your chipset can do. Install them on Wi-Fi with at least 15 GB of headroom above the published figure, because patch downloads unpack before they replace.
The 4 GB RAM shortlist (built on published minimum specs)
Four published RAM floors set the whole landscape. Genshin Impact asks for Android 10, 4 GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 660 or Helio G88. The Division Resurgence also lists a 4 GB floor.
Wuthering Waves asks for roughly 6 GB and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-class chip, and Where Winds Meet asks for about 8 GB.
Hitting the floor is not the same as playing well. On a 4 GB phone, Genshin runs at low settings and 30 fps, and it will get hot. Our Android overheating fixes page exists largely because of games like this one.
If your phone has 4 GB of RAM or less, install from this list instead. Every one of these is verified live on Play and light enough to be enjoyable rather than survivable:

How we picked (26 August 2026)
- A live US Play Store listing, opened by hand. No listing, no entry, no link. That rule alone removed seven games that other lists still recommend.
- Price, ads flag, in-app purchase flag, install band, rating and update date copied exactly as Google shows them. We quote store bands like 10,000,000+ rather than inventing download counts.
- A structural verdict for every pick using the four-verdict test above, based on the developer’s own description and how the game is built, not on how it is marketed.
- Storage and RAM from published specs. Where a developer publishes a figure, we use it. Where nobody publishes one, we say so instead of guessing.
- Package ids checked individually. GTA III resolves at com.rockstar.gta3 and 404s at com.rockstargames.gta3. Small differences like that are why so many lists link to nothing.
- Spread across sub-genres. Crime sandbox, anime action RPG, survival, MMO, free-roam driving, and small offline worlds for weak phones.
What we did not do, honestly. We did not install all 37 games on every chipset, and we did not benchmark frame rates.

This is the complete 2010 single-player game plus Undead Nightmare, running natively on a phone. No servers, no season pass, no store. You ride out of Armadillo at dusk and nothing on your screen asks you for money.
The catch is the price and the small sample size. $39.99 with no trial, only a 10,000+ install band, and 756 ratings means very few people have reported back about your specific chipset. It is also a 2010 control scheme on glass, so a gamepad is close to mandatory.
Best for: one big offline game you own outright. Skip if: you have no controller, or your phone is not a recent flagship.
2. Minecraft

Still the purest open world on the platform, because the world has no edge. Worlds save to the phone, so after the first launch you can build in airplane mode forever. Cross-play with Bedrock friends on console and PC works from a phone.
Two catches. The listing is now titled “Minecraft: Dream it, Build it!” on Play, which trips people searching the old name, and it carries an in-app purchase flag for Marketplace skins and Minecoins.
Realms is a separate monthly subscription, and Java mods do not work on Bedrock. Mojang’s official help centre is the place to check what your purchase covers.
Best for: anyone who wants a world with no ending. Skip if: you want a story with a last mission.
3. Terraria

The best value on this page and it is not close. $4.99 buys a huge procedurally generated world, hundreds of bosses and items, full offline play, and Play confirms zero ads and zero in-app purchases. It runs on hardware that cannot open Genshin’s title screen.
It is 2D, which rules it out for anyone who typed open world expecting a 3D camera. The inventory UI is dense on a phone screen, and the first two hours are genuinely confusing without a wiki open.
Best for: the most hours per dollar of any game here. Skip if: you need 3D free-look.
4. Goat Simulator 3

A full console port, not a trimmed mobile build. San Angora is a real open world with quests, mutators, hidden content and local chaos, and the listing carries neither ads nor in-app purchases. It is one of the very few premium 3D open worlds on Play that you buy once and own.
The 3.8 rating is the honest warning. Reviewers cite performance and touch controls on a game designed for a gamepad, and the joke thins out after a couple of hours. Note the package: com.coffeestain.goatsimulator3, not com.coffeestainstudios.goatsimulator3, which does not exist.
Best for: a controller-connected phone and a group chat to send clips to. Skip if: you are playing on glass only.
5. Crashlands 2

$9.99 and a 100,000+ install band make it a niche buy. It is isometric rather than free-camera 3D, and the mid-game can turn into inventory admin once the crafting tree fans out.
Best for: crafting players who want a finished game with no live-service hooks. Skip if: you want combat depth over systems depth.
6. DYSMANTLE

A hand-crafted post-apocalyptic island where the hook is that everything breaks. Fences, cars, statues, park benches: you smash them for materials and the world visibly changes as you strip it. It is single-player and offline with a real progression arc.
The listing still shows an in-app purchase flag on top of the $10.99 price, because the expansions are sold separately, so the complete-edition cost is higher than the sticker. The camera is top-down and the destroy-everything loop is repetitive by design.
Best for: methodical players who like clearing a map. Skip if: $10.99 plus DLC is not in budget.
The GTA lane: Rockstar ports and the clones
7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Still the best answer to “open world games like GTA for Android”, and the highest-rated Rockstar title on Play by a distance. Three cities, countryside, planes, a full offline campaign, and it runs on phones that choke on everything in the anime section below. One million ratings at 4.5 is a rare thing for a 2013 mobile port.
It is a straight $6.99 purchase with no trial, unlike Rockstar’s newer listings. Some radio tracks were cut for licensing, draw distance is short, and touch aiming in shootouts is bad. Cloud saves ride on a Rockstar Social Club login, so sign in before you change phones.
Best for: the single best offline open world under $10. Skip if: you want modern visuals; buy the Definitive edition instead.
8. GTA: Liberty City Stories

The cheapest way to try mobile GTA, because Rockstar switched it to a free download. The store text is clear: you get up to thirty minutes as a trial, then a one-time in-app purchase unlocks the full game, and GTA+ subscribers play it free while it stays in the catalogue.
Thirty minutes barely clears the tutorial, so treat the free label with care. It is a PSP game upscaled, so pop-in is heavy, and Toni Cipriani’s Liberty City is the GTA III map with 1998 changes rather than a new city.
Best for: trying GTA on your phone before spending anything. Skip if: you want a map you have never seen.
9. GTA: Chinatown Wars

The 3.5 rating is the lowest of Rockstar’s Android catalogue. The touch minigames, hotwiring and screwdriver prompts, have aged badly, and the fixed camera disappoints anyone who wanted a 3D GTA.
Best for: 3 GB and 4 GB RAM phones. Skip if: the top-down view is a dealbreaker.
10. Bully: Anniversary Edition

Bullworth Academy and the town around it form one of the few open worlds on Android with no online component whatsoever. Class schedules, factions, a funny story, and a map small enough to learn by heart. It is the only Rockstar mobile title rated Teen rather than Mature 17+.
The trial is thirty minutes, which covers the opening and not much else. The timing-based class minigames are fiddly on touch, and this port has a long history of breaking after major Android updates, so read the recent reviews for your Android version before you unlock it.
Best for: players who want an open world with a story and no shooting. Skip if: you are on a brand-new Android release and cannot check reviews first.
11. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Neon 1980s Miami, two islands, and the tightest mission pacing of the classic trilogy. It is small enough to sit comfortably on a budget phone and plays entirely offline after the first launch.
The 3.3 rating from 206,014 people is the real story, and it is mostly about controls and stability rather than the game itself. Motorcycle and helicopter handling on touch is rough, licensed radio tracks are missing, and the map is a fraction of San Andreas’s for only $2 less.
Best for: anyone who specifically wants Vice City. Skip if: you are choosing on value; San Andreas is the better $6.99.
12. Grand Theft Auto III

It is the crudest of the three. No swimming, a silent protagonist, no motorbikes, and 2001 visuals on a 2026 display. The 3.5 rating reflects control complaints more than anything else.
Best for: completists. Skip if: this is your first mobile GTA.
13. GTA: San Andreas – Definitive

The Unreal Engine remaster: rebuilt lighting, a long draw distance, a GTA V-style weapon wheel and checkpoint saves. Since the Netflix builds were withdrawn, this is the only way to get a Definitive Edition of San Andreas on Android. Its 4.1 is notably better than the console launch reception.
It costs $19.99 for a game whose classic version is $6.99 in the same store, and it is a much heavier download with steeper hardware needs. The 4 November 2025 update date is also the oldest in Rockstar’s current Android catalogue.
Best for: a flagship phone and a preference for modern lighting. Skip if: $13 extra for the same missions sounds absurd. It is a fair reaction.
14. Gangstar Vegas: World of Crime

Play flags it for both ads and in-app purchases, and the economy is aggressive: gear is gacha-adjacent, progression stalls without spending, and video ads arrive constantly. Gameloft’s servers gate a lot of it, so it is not a clean offline experience despite the single-player framing.
Best for: free crime sandbox with real production values. Skip if: you want to play on a plane.
15. MadOut 2: Grand Auto Racing

The listing promises 30-plus story missions plus a shared city that supports up to 200 players, with both online and offline content. The driving physics are the genuine draw.
It carries ads and in-app purchases, and the production values are rough: animation, voice work and UI all feel homemade. The 200-player city attracts griefers with nothing stopping them, and the frequent updates mean frequent large redownloads. If you remember it as MadOut2 BigCityOnline, it was renamed, not delisted.
Best for: physics-driven driving in a huge free city. Skip if: polish matters to you.
16. Dude Theft Wars

Ads and in-app purchases are both flagged, the humour is juvenile, and the developer still labels it BETA years in. Progression is thin because it is a physics playground rather than a campaign. The Play title reads “Dude Theft Wars FPS Open world” and the package is com.PoxelStudios.DudeTheftAuto, which matches neither.
Best for: free offline messing about on a budget phone. Skip if: you wanted a story.

No ads on the listing and a 4.5 from more than 100,000 ratings is a strong start for a mobile shooter. Ubisoft’s official page lists the supported devices.
It is always online, with no offline mode at all, so it fails every offline search. It is a live-service looter, so the endgame is seasons and a battle pass. Budget 15 to 25 GB once assets finish, and copy the package id rather than typing it: com.ubisoft.the.division.mobile.combat.shooting.open.world.rpg.
Best for: the best free open world with no ads. Skip if: you play without a connection.
18. NTE: Neverness to Everness

It is a modern supernatural city rather than another fantasy meadow: drivable cars, apartments you can buy, and vertical traversal through the skyline. This is the 2026 launch that almost every competing list has missed.
It is a gacha underneath the nice wrapper, so the character economy is the familiar trap, and a launch-window rating is always flattering. It is always online, the download is large, and anything above low settings wants flagship hardware. Play did not show an update date on the listing when we checked.
Best for: people bored of fantasy-field open worlds. Skip if: gacha pulls make you miserable.
19. Wuthering Waves

A markedly better-rated Genshin alternative: 4.3 from 513,162 ratings against Genshin’s 3.2. Combat is faster and higher-skill, built on dodge-counters and echo swapping, and traversal is the standout, with wall-running, grappling and free climbing. The listing currently advertises version 3.6 as live, and Kuro publishes patch notes on its own site.
The hardware ask is steeper than Genshin’s: roughly 6 GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-class chip, plus around 12 GB free. It is always online and nearly every version update forces a long mandatory download.
Best for: players who want the combat to actually be hard. Skip if: your phone has 4 GB of RAM.
20. Where Winds Meet

It also has the heaviest requirements here: roughly 8 GB of RAM and 25 to 30 GB free, with community reports of a fully unpacked install well past that. It is always online, and mobile is the compromised way to play a cross-platform game. Grind and battle-pass monetisation are present even though gacha pressure is lighter than Genshin’s.
Best for: a current flagship phone and a wuxia itch. Skip if: you have under 40 GB free.

The exploration and puzzle density in Teyvat are still unmatched, and version 7.0 pushed into Snezhnaya, but the store verdict has turned.
Storage is the real barrier at 40 GB minimum and 60 GB recommended, and it grows every version. The official floor is Android 10, 4 GB RAM and a Snapdragon 660 or Helio G88, which buys you low settings and 30 fps.

Released worldwide on 22 January 2026 and rated 4.6 from 86,653 people. It is a 3D open-world spin-off of Arknights that bolts a Factorio-style automation and factory-building layer onto exploration and real-time squad combat. Nothing else on Android combines those two things.
The automation layer is a heavy cognitive load and will annoy anyone who just wants to roam. It is always online, gacha operator recruitment is the monetisation, and a running base makes low-end phones struggle. Being new, the endgame is thin.
Best for: people who like spreadsheets and swords equally. Skip if: factory logistics sound like work.
23. Infinity Nikki

Play’s own description calls it a multi-platform open-world game built on Unreal Engine 5, and it is the most technically impressive non-combat world on Android. Miraland is one continuous map with gliding, swimming and climbing traversal, and there is no killing in it at all. It is a proper counterweight to a genre full of guns.
The 3.5 rating from 50,527 people is monetisation backlash, and we are not going to quote it as a 4-star game. It is a gacha dress-up RPG underneath, the download is large, and there is a real GPU floor. Watch the package: com.infoldgames.infinitynikkien, because the test build com.infoldgames.infinitynikkien.test still resolves.
Best for: exploration without combat. Skip if: outfit gacha is not a system you want in your life.
Open-world survival
24. Once Human

The strongest survival open world on Android and a much stranger, better-written one than the Last Day on Earth crowd. You scavenge, build a territory, capture defeated anomalies to fight alongside you, and craft weapons out of anomaly power. It came to mobile on 23 April 2025 and rates 4.5 with no ads on the listing.
The catch is brutal and needs saying plainly: it runs seasonal scenarios with server wipes, so your base and progress reset when a season ends. It is always online, the download is large, and mid-range phones feel it. The package is com.h73.jhqyna, which looks like nothing, and there is a separate PvP spin-off called Once Human: RaidZone that is not this game.
Best for: survival players who want a fresh start every season. Skip if: you want a base that lasts.
25. ARK: Ultimate Mobile Edition

This is the current ARK app, and it bundles The Island plus Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction and both Genesis parts. That is a huge amount of dinosaur-taming open world on a phone, for free.
It replaced ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile, whose listing is now dead, so any list still linking com.studiowildcard.wardrumstudios.ark is linking a 404. Ultimate Mobile Edition carries both ads and in-app purchases and pushes a Primal Pass subscription hard, with real quality-of-life behind it. The 3.8 rating is about performance and monetisation, and it is one of the heaviest downloads here.
Best for: free dinosaur survival with console-sized maps. Skip if: subscriptions inside free games annoy you.
26. LifeAfter

A genuinely large, seamless post-apocalyptic world with weather, hunger, base building on real terrain and co-op with other survivors. After years of expansions it is still one of the best-looking survival games on the platform, and the listing carries no ads.
The 3.5 average from 577,834 ratings is driven by heavy monetisation and long grinds, and that is a fair reading of it.

Best for: co-op survival with real terrain. Skip if: grind fatigue sets in fast for you.
Open-world MMOs
27. Albion Online

It is online only and brutally unfriendly to newcomers, because losing a fight in a red zone means losing everything you carried. Premium status is the effective subscription, and the mobile UI is dense. There is no offline anything.
Best for: players who want other players to be the content. Skip if: losing your gear would end the hobby for you.
28. Old School RuneScape

Gielinor is a completely seamless world with no gate on where you can walk, and it runs on almost any Android phone made in the last decade. Same account and same servers as the desktop client, so you can grind on the bus and continue at home. The download is small.
The free area is a slice of the map; the real game needs a membership, which is the highest recurring cost on this page. It is a 2007-styled point-and-click MMO, so it is slow, visually ancient, and its skills take hundreds of hours. It also eats battery on long sessions.
Best for: a genuinely weak phone and a lot of patience. Skip if: you want anything to happen quickly.

Auto-pathing and auto-combat do a lot of the playing for you, which hollows out the exploration for many people, and that is exactly the question our verdict test is for. It is always online, the install is heavy, and it needs a powerful phone to resemble the screenshots. Monetisation is standard Korean MMO: pearls, costumes and pet convenience.
Best for: the prettiest world on a flagship phone. Skip if: a game that plays itself is not a game to you.
Free-roam driving worlds

It carries ads and in-app purchases, the lobby is the whole point so there is no offline answer here, and the economy pushes hard toward buying cars. Watch the package id spelling: com.olzhas.carparking.multyplayer, with a y.
Best for: free-roam driving with other people in the street. Skip if: you want single-player.
31. Car Parking Multiplayer 2

Best for: free driving without ads. Skip if: you want the busiest lobbies; play the first one.

Ads and in-app purchases both apply, and vehicle unlocks are slow without spending or watching. There is no story and no mission structure, which some people find aimless. The sequel’s package is com.dogbytegames.otrnext, which does not match its store name at all.
Best for: quiet offroad exploring. Skip if: you need goals.

Ad frequency in the free version is heavy. There is no story, no characters and nothing to do but drive, so treat it as a driving sandbox rather than an open-world game in the narrative sense.

Best for: instant offline driving on a low-end phone. Skip if: you want anything resembling a plot.
34. Indian Bikes Driving 3D

It is rough. Janky physics, low-poly visuals, no missions and heavy ad monetisation. It is a toybox, not a designed world, and several near-identical clones use similar names; com.Rohit.IndianBikes by Rohit Gaming Studio is the real one.
Best for: ten minutes of chaos with no wallet risk. Skip if: you want a game rather than a sandbox.

Free is not the whole story. The first chapter is the demo and the full game is a one-time in-app purchase, so budget for it. It is isometric and visually plain, and the difficulty is old-school, with permadeath options for people who want them.
Best for: the offline open-world RPG answer on cheap hardware. Skip if: you need 3D free-look.

Our verdict is mission-hub rather than true open world: the world is a map you move across between instanced fights, not a simulation. It carries ads and in-app purchases, and progression gates behind timers.
Best for: a colourful open world for a younger player. Skip if: auto-battlers bore you.
37. Oceanhorn

The best Zelda-like on Android, with island-hopping exploration, dungeons, puzzles and a full offline single-player campaign. One correction to nearly every older list: it is no longer a premium purchase. It is a free download with in-app purchases now, which is exactly why the rating fell to 3.5.
Free in practice means a demo, because the free version gates content that used to be a one-time buy. It is a 2013 game and looks it, the structure is hub-and-island with loading between, and the last update was 16 September 2025. There is no “Oceanhorn 3” on Google Play, whatever other lists say; the sibling listing is Oceanhorn: Chronos Dungeon.
Best for: offline Zelda-style adventuring. Skip if: a 2025 update date on an ageing app worries you. It should slightly.

The Rockstar mobile reset: which GTA games are free now
Rockstar quietly rebuilt its Android pricing and no competing list reflects it. Three titles are now free downloads with a thirty-minute trial and a one-time in-app purchase to unlock the full game, and they are also included while you subscribe to GTA+.
The classic ports stayed premium. The result is a catalogue where the same game can be $6.99 in one listing and $19.99 in another.

Two things follow from that table. If you want to sample mobile GTA for nothing, install Liberty City Stories or Chinatown Wars, not San Andreas. And if you want the best single game, San Andreas at $6.99 is still the buy, because $19.99 for the Definitive remaster of the same missions is a hard sell on a phone screen.
The other half of the reset is what left. The Netflix-published builds of the trilogy are gone, so the free-with-Netflix route no longer exists. Rockstar’s own newswire post and Netflix’s announcement document the deal that has since expired.
Open worlds that really work offline
The honest offline list is short, and every big free game on this page fails it. These are the picks that keep working with the connection off, after one connected launch to verify the licence and pull assets.
- Red Dead Redemption — $39.99, no ads, no IAP, single-player only by design.
- GTA: San Andreas, Vice City, GTA III, Liberty City Stories, Chinatown Wars and Bully — all offline campaigns. Sign in to Social Club once if you want cloud saves to survive a new phone.
- Terraria and Crashlands 2 — no ads, no in-app purchases, no server anywhere.
- Minecraft — offline after the first launch. Realms, Marketplace and cross-play need a connection.
- DYSMANTLE and Goat Simulator 3 — premium single-player.
- Exiled Kingdoms RPG, Oceanhorn, Dude Theft Wars (story mode), Extreme Car Driving Simulator, Indian Bikes Driving 3D — free to download and playable with no signal.
These need a connection every time you open them: Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, Where Winds Meet, NTE, Arknights: Endfield, Infinity Nikki, Once Human, ARK, LifeAfter, Albion Online, Old School RuneScape, Black Desert Mobile, The Division Resurgence, Gangstar Vegas and both Car Parking games.
Three picks sit in between. MadOut 2, OTR 2 and Botworld Adventure all have content you can reach without a signal, but Play flags every one of them for ads, and ad delivery needs a connection.

Free open worlds and what the free ones actually paywall
Free on Google Play means six different things. Here is which is which, using Play’s own flags rather than marketing copy.
- Free, no ads, monetised by gacha or a battle pass. The Division Resurgence, NTE, Wuthering Waves, Where Winds Meet, Genshin Impact, Arknights: Endfield, Infinity Nikki, Once Human, LifeAfter, Black Desert Mobile. Nothing interrupts you; the pressure is on characters and passes.
- Free, no ads, subscription-gated. Old School RuneScape needs a membership for most of the map. Albion Online sells Premium status.
- Free download, one-time unlock. GTA: Liberty City Stories, GTA: Chinatown Wars, Bully, Exiled Kingdoms RPG and Oceanhorn. You will pay once to finish them, and that is the good deal on this page.
- Free with ads and in-app purchases. Gangstar Vegas, MadOut 2, Dude Theft Wars, ARK: Ultimate Mobile Edition, Car Parking Multiplayer, OTR 2, Extreme Car Driving Simulator, Botworld Adventure.
- Free, no ads, in-app purchases only. Car Parking Multiplayer 2 sells cars and upgrades and carries no ad flag, which makes it the only free driving world here that never interrupts you.
- Free with ads and no in-app purchases at all. Of the 37 picks, only Indian Bikes Driving 3D, which is an unusual listing.

One route people forget: Google Play Pass bundles a rotating library of paid games into one subscription. Check the Play listing for a Play Pass badge before you buy any premium pick here, because you may already have it.
Commonly recommended, and not actually open world
These games are all good. None of them is an open world, and putting them in a numbered open-world ranking is how readers end up feeling lied to.
- Sky: Children of the Light — instanced zones. Seven-plus linked realms with loading between them. Free, no ads, 4.5 from 1,164,082 ratings, updated 19 August 2026. Lovely game, wrong list.
- Diablo Immortal — instanced zones. Sanctuary is level-gated areas joined by loading screens. Free, no ads, 4.7 from 2,067,359 ratings, updated 13 August 2026.
- Gangstar New Orleans — instanced missions launched from a fast-travel hub, with timer-gated turf building. Free with ads and IAP, 50,000,000+ installs, 4.3 from 878,096 ratings, updated 8 May 2026. Play Gangstar Vegas instead.
- Payback 2 - The Battle Sandbox — free-roam mode bolted onto a campaign of scored events. Free with ads and IAP, 4.5 from 2,264,498 ratings, last updated 27 August 2025.
- Last Day on Earth: Survival and Grim Soul — zone maps with loading between instances, not seamless worlds. Both free with ads and IAP, updated 13 August 2026 and 17 July 2026.
- Stardew Valley — screen transitions between every area. It is a wonderful $4.99 game with no ads and no IAP, updated 26 June 2026, and it belongs in our farming games list, not this one.
- Honkai: Star Rail — turn-based and zoned. Not an open world in any sense, despite appearing on lists like this constantly.
- Vibe City and Grand Outlaws — online roleplay sandboxes that keep showing up on 2026 lists. Vibe City rates 3.6 from 15,597 ratings. Grand Outlaws has 50,000+ installs and too few reviews for Play to show an average at all. Neither has earned a slot yet.
The delisted graveyard, the fakes, and the package-id traps
Seven games and the Netflix GTA builds that other open-world lists still recommend cannot be installed on Android today. Every one of these returns a 404 or no longer appears in Google Play’s US search.
- ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile (com.studiowildcard.wardrumstudios.ark) — pulled after its servers shut down. The live replacement is ARK: Ultimate Mobile Edition, com.studiowildcard.arkuse.
- Minecraft Earth (com.mojang.minecraftearth) — Microsoft shut the servers in June 2021. It has been dead for five years and is still recommended by a top-ranking list.
- Portal Knights (com.505games.portalknights) — delisted, still priced at $4.99 on at least one competing page.
- My Time at Portia mobile (com.pathea.mytimeatportiamobile) and Radiation City (com.atypicalgames.radiationcity) — both gone.
- Undawn (com.levelinfinite.sgameGlobal.undawnGP) and Mini DAYZ 2 — no longer in US Play search. Treat as gone.
- The Netflix GTA builds (com.netflix.NGP.* packages) — GTA III and Vice City left Netflix Games in December 2024, San Andreas in December 2025. Aggregator sites still list them as top results and they will not install.
Then there are the games that never existed. “Cyberpunk 2077 Mobile Edition” is not real. Neither are “Starfield: Eclipse Edition”, “Cyberpunk: Wild Shepherd”, “The Elder Scrolls Online: Mobile” or “Red Dead Redemption II Mobile”.
All five are recommended by AI-spun blogs right now, none has a Google Play listing, and every one of those names is a keyword that fake-APK sites farm. If a search result offers you one as a download, close the tab.
Finally, the package ids that look wrong and are right. Copy them from the Play listing rather than typing them:
- GTA III is com.rockstar.gta3. com.rockstargames.gta3 is a 404.
- Once Human is com.h73.jhqyna, and its Play publisher shows as Exptional Global, not NetEase.
- Last Day on Earth is zombie.survival.craft.z; Grim Soul is fantasy.survival.game.rpg; Frostborn is valhalla.survival.craft.z. No vendor prefixes at all.
- Car Parking Multiplayer uses the misspelling multyplayer.
- Goat Simulator 3 is com.coffeestain.goatsimulator3, not com.coffeestainstudios.*.

Emulation: PPSSPP, and the Windows-on-ARM crowd

This is the project formerly known as Project Mugen, and it is the most anticipated GTA-style mobile open world in development. It is not playable, there is no confirmed global launch date, and nothing about its performance is verified. Pre-register it; do not plan your week around it.
