Android Hire Verdict — A thinness flex that mostly works
The iPhone Air is a coherent product rather than a stunt: Apple used a titanium frame, an A19 Pro, and aggressive silicon-level efficiency to build a 5.6mm phone that still runs a 120Hz display all day and survives 6m immersion. The price is paid in the camera system — one 48MP lens, no ultrawide, no telephoto — and in a single speaker. If you have wanted a phone that vanishes in a pocket and you shoot mostly at 1x, it is the most interesting iPhone Apple sells. If you use zoom or ultrawide regularly, the iPhone 17 costs less and does more.

How Apple got to 5.6mm
Three decisions made the thickness possible. First, a grade 5 titanium frame — stiffer per millimetre than the aluminium used in the iPhone 17, which matters enormously when the chassis is this thin and bending is the obvious failure mode. Second, a single rear camera, which removes the lens stack depth that forces every multi-camera phone into a thicker body or a taller bump. Third, eSIM only: deleting the SIM tray frees a surprising amount of internal volume in a phone with this little depth to work with.
The camera plateau across the top of the back is where the remaining depth went. It houses the 48MP module, the A19 Pro, and the N1 wireless silicon, leaving the rest of the body free for battery. It is a visually divisive design, but it is the reason the phone measures 5.6mm across most of its area rather than only at the edges.
The result weighs 165g. For reference, that is lighter than the iPhone 17 and dramatically lighter than any Pro Max, and the 6.5-inch screen is only marginally smaller than the biggest iPhones.
Battery: 3,149mAh should not last a day, and yet
On paper the Air's cell looks alarming — around 30% smaller than what a comparably sized Android flagship carries. GSMArena's testing returned 12 hours 44 minutes of active use, which is genuinely respectable and better than several thicker phones.
That comes from efficiency rather than capacity. The A19 Pro is a 3nm design, the LTPO panel drops to very low refresh rates when static, and Apple's N1 chip handles Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at lower power than the third-party silicon it replaces. iOS 26's adaptive power management also throttles background work more aggressively on this model than on other iPhones.
The caveat is headroom. A normal day is fine; a heavy day — sustained navigation, hotspot, video capture, long gaming — will run the Air down faster than an iPhone 17 Pro, and there is no reserve to absorb it. Apple's answer is a MagSafe battery pack built specifically for the Air, which tells you the company knows this is the trade.
One camera: what you actually lose
The rear system is a single 48MP f/1.6 sensor at 26mm equivalent, 1/1.56", with dual pixel PDAF and sensor-shift OIS. It is a good main camera and it shoots 4K60 Dolby Vision.
What is missing is everything either side of 1x. There is no ultrawide, so no 0.5x landscapes, no close-focus macro, and no wide group shots in tight rooms. There is no telephoto, so 2x is a centre crop of the 48MP sensor — usable in daylight, soft indoors — and anything beyond that degrades quickly.
The 18MP front camera is more interesting than usual: it is multi-aspect with Center Stage, meaning it can shoot landscape framing while you hold the phone in portrait, and it automatically widens for group selfies.
The realistic assessment: if you review your camera roll and nearly everything is shot at 1x, you lose almost nothing. If you regularly use 0.5x or 3x, you are giving up a lot of the iPhone camera system for a thinner phone.
iPhone Air vs iPhone 17: which one to buy
The iPhone 17 undercuts the Air by $200 and comes with a dual-camera system including an ultrawide, stereo speakers, and a larger battery in a body that is still thin by any normal standard.
The Air's arguments are thinness, weight, the titanium frame, 12GB of RAM, 256GB as its floor, and the A19 Pro instead of the standard A19. Those are real, but they are not a longer feature list — they are a different set of priorities.
Buy the Air if the physical object matters to you more than camera versatility. Buy the iPhone 17 if you want the more complete phone for less money. Buy the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a vapour chamber, a 6-core GPU, and a full three-camera system, and accept the extra weight that comes with them.
