Nintendo eShop Maintenance Pulls PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay Offline for Three Hours

Nintendo has scheduled a three-hour-and-fifteen-minute maintenance window that switches off three payment methods across its stores, running from 11 p.m. PT on Monday 14 September to 2:15 a.m. PT on Tuesday 15 September. Apple Pay and Google Pay stop working on the Nintendo Store during that window, and PayPal stops working in the eShop on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

The stores themselves stay open. This is a payment-processor outage, not a storefront outage, so browsing, downloading games you already own and redeeming eShop balance should all continue as normal. Only the three routes above are affected.

Nintendo eShop maintenance times in your region

The window is a single block of time worldwide, so the calendar date depends on where you are. In North America it starts late on the Monday night; everywhere east of the Atlantic it lands on Tuesday morning.

• Pacific: 11 p.m. PT Monday 14 September to 2:15 a.m. PT Tuesday 15 September
• Eastern: 2 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. ET on Tuesday 15 September
• UK: 7 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. BST on Tuesday 15 September
• Central Europe: 8 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. CEST on Tuesday 15 September

Nintendo has not said what the work involves, and it has not flagged any knock-on effect for cards already saved to an account.

What to do if you were planning a purchase

If you have a pre-order or a sale item timed near that window, pay for it beforehand or use a credit or debit card instead. Adding funds to your account balance in advance is the safer route, because eShop balance is spent locally and does not touch the payment processors going down.

The timing matters more than usual this month. Nintendo is running two presentations on 8 and 9 September, and the eShop typically fills with new listings and discounts within hours of a broadcast — our rundown of the Nintendo Direct start times and running lengths has the schedule. Anything announced there that goes on sale the following week could collide with this window.

Two more Nintendo downtime windows this month

The payments work is not the only outage on the calendar. Two others are already scheduled, and one of them takes a game offline completely.

• Fire Emblem Heroes: down on Monday 7 September, roughly 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT, to prepare version 10.9.0. The mobile game is unplayable for the full three hours on Android and iOS.
• eShop code redemption (Japan only): down 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. PT on Wednesday 16 September, which is 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. JST on Thursday 17 September. Download codes and pre-paid cards cannot be redeemed on Switch or Switch 2 during that hour. Other regions are unaffected.

None of these touch online multiplayer or Nintendo Switch Online membership features. That is a different set of servers, and the last time those went down it was a separate announcement — we covered the two Nintendo Switch Online downtime windows in August when they hit.

Why payment outages keep landing on Tuesdays

Nintendo groups this kind of work into the small hours of the US Monday night, which is Tuesday morning in Europe and Tuesday afternoon in Japan. It is the quietest overlap the company has across three major regions, and it is why almost every payment or account maintenance notice in recent months has carried the same shape: a short block, announced roughly a week ahead, listed separately for each payment provider rather than as one storefront outage.

Practically, that means the notice is worth reading for which processor is named rather than which store. A PayPal window does not stop card purchases. An Apple Pay and Google Pay window on the Nintendo Store does not stop the eShop on the console itself. On 15 September both happen to be scheduled at once, which is what makes this one wider than usual.

Switch and Switch 2 are both affected

The PayPal portion covers the eShop on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 equally — there is no split between the two consoles here, and no separate window for either. Owners of the newer console have had a busy few weeks of store activity, from the Switch 2 price increase in the UK to a steady run of large downloads landing on the system.

Elsewhere in Nintendo's software, the companion app picked up a change worth knowing about if you share captures: the 3.5.0 update added the ability to delete uploaded screenshots and videos. And on the release side, Pokemon Champions adds Z Mega Evolutions on 9 September across Switch and mobile, a week before the Japan-only code window.

Nintendo publishes these schedules on its regional support sites and updates them if a window moves. Nothing here has been described as an emergency outage, and no service is expected to be down beyond the times listed.
